A Q&A with photographer Lucia Griggi

Insights into Lucia’s career, info on upcoming trips, and tips for keen photographers

If you join one of our photo tours, you might have the good fortune of learning from photographer and filmmaker Lucia Griggi. She’s worked as a surf photographer for Roxy and Billabong, she’s explored the Arctic on expeditions for National Geographic, she’s documented wildlife projects for WWF, and she’s helped produce documentaries for Warner Brothers and Disney. Her incredibly diverse focus has taken her all over the world, and gotten her a multitude of awards and recognitions. We thought it fitting to check in with her and ask her about her motivation, inspiration, and to share some tips for keen photographers.

What got you into photography initially?

I’ve always been drawn to exploration and adventure, and photography became the perfect way to experience the world, tell stories, and connect with people. It allowed me to capture the beauty and excitement of the places I visited and the people I met along the way.

How has your photography evolved over time?

I started out with surf photography in the UK around 2000, capturing the energy and movement of the ocean. Over time, my work has expanded into travel and adventure photography, focusing on remote landscapes, wildlife, and cultural storytelling. My style has definitely developed—there’s a balance of freshness, vividness, and precision that reflects my approach to photography.

Can you describe any favorite moments you’ve experienced as a photographer?

There have been so many incredible moments, from being out in the middle of the ocean shooting surfers to exploring some of the most remote corners of the world. Traveling to places like Hawaii, California, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives has given me unforgettable experiences—whether it’s witnessing breathtaking wildlife, meeting inspiring people, or simply being in the right place at the right time to capture a once-in-a-lifetime shot.

What can people expect on our upcoming trips with you?

These trips are all about immersing yourself in the experience—going beyond just taking photos and truly connecting with the landscapes, wildlife, and cultures we encounter. I love sharing my approach to photography, from composition to storytelling, and helping others push their creative boundaries. More than anything, it’s about adventure, inspiration, and capturing moments that matter.

What’s the general content of your camera bag?

It depends on where I’m heading, but I always pack my essential camera bodies and lenses for different situations—whether it’s a fast prime lens for low light or a long telephoto for wildlife. A sturdy tripod, memory cards, and backups are a must, and I always carry protective gear to keep everything safe in extreme conditions.

What advice would you give to aspiring photographers?

The best advice I can give is to put in the time. Shoot every day, experiment, and don’t be afraid to push yourself outside your comfort zone. Hard work and persistence are key—keep learning, keep evolving, and most importantly, stay passionate about what you’re capturing.

Keen to learn from Lucia? You can join her on a Bears of Slovenia Photo Tour (this July / August) or a Tanzania Photo Safari (this November). During both trips, Lucia will share her knowledge and help you hone your skills throughout the experience. Since we travel in small groups, there will be plenty of time for individual tutoring, so that you can work and learn at your own level and pace.
